What are your summer plans?

“Every summer, since 1978,” says author Leslie Leyland Fields, “I move to Harvester Island off the west coast of Kodiak Island

[Alaska].” On this island, Leslie, her husband, their 6 children, and a crew are the only inhabitants. Except for, you know, bears and such. “Here,” she explains, “we work in a family fishing operation, Fields’ Wild Salmon.”

In Leslie’s latest blog she gives us a glimpse into what it’s like grocery shop for 12 people . . . for 3 ½ months . . . and offers a few thoughts on another kind of shopping—one that doesn’t cost a dime.
